Corky's Chicken Dinner
There is no better way to show your pet how much you love them than to cook for them. Over the years, Corky, my Miniature Schnauzer, has been given after dinner treats (in her bowl) as a reward for not begging at the table. I spent years disciplining her to stay in her basket during dinner. As luck would have it, Corky loves to visit my neighbor and unbeknownst to me, was quite often getting fed under the table during dinner. Hence, she is not quite as disciplined during dinner anymore. But, there are worse things. I had never actually considered cooking for Corky on a daily basis but it is now part of my daily routine and only takes a couple of minutes. And she does love it so!

This simple recipe is easy to incorporate into your pet’s daily feeding. Whether you have a dog or a cat, this meal is a treat that will make your pet know they’re special.

What you need for this recipe:

1/2 pound of chicken breast (organic if possible)
Chicken broth
Dry food/kibble (dog or cat)

Depending on the size of your dog or cat, slice the chicken into strips, enough for one to two dinners. I use one to two strips for my twelve pound dog. Cook as much or as little as you like. The chicken will keep raw or cooked in the frig for about 3 days. I don’t like to keep it around much longer than that.

Place the strips in a shallow bowl or plate with a small amount of water. Cover with another plate, both microwave safe. I never use plastic cookware or plastic wrap in the microwave. Cook in the microwave for about 6-8 minutes (depending on your microwave). Remove, and slice into small bite size pieces. Sprinkle the chicken pieces on top of your pet’s dry food. Pour a bit of chicken broth over both and microwave for 20 to 30 seconds to meld the flavors. Make sure the mixture is cool before giving it to your pet. Serve immediately and watch the happiness begin.

SHORT CUT:
When you’re on the go and in a pinch, already cooked and sliced chicken strips are available at Trader Joes. Purdue "Short Cuts" also works well for this recipe and is available at your local grocery store.

Although Corky prefers organic chicken, she will tolerate the shortcut. Whichever you choose, your pet will love you for it.
